Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Please enjoy it
the way that you see fit. Today I'll be still, reflective, and solo. My
only mission for Thanksgiving 2013 is self-care. I'm neither sad nor
depressed. I'm not anti-social and I'm definitely not
anti-family (shout out to the McCullough and the Silver families). The
last 14 months, however, have been life-altering for me. I've lost a
great deal: some family, some colleagues, lots of stability, my home,
and too frequently, my peace of mind. Instead of fully processing and
re-adjusting, I've worked through the grief, been traveling and have
attended to other people - hiding from my own issues.

Most
troubling, though, is that I've focused too much on what I don't have
and what has NOT happened for me. I've also focused too much on my
wrongdoings, failures, and shortcomings. And I've certainly been too
focused on me not being or having enough - not being smart enough and
not having enough power; not being fast enough nor in step; not being
stable and not having enough money (!); not feeling beautiful and not
being confident. For some time, I’ve doubted that I have enough of
anything to get to the next level. My faith has been shaken. I’ve been
too focused on all the deficits, comparing myself to others, peeping
over fences, and wondering “How come I don’t have that?” or “When is my
turn?” And then I’d beat myself up because I’m supposed to know better,
I’m supposed to be past all my adolescent, self-pitying yearnings. One
would think.

A shift happens for me only when I’m still,
reflective, and solo. Different people need different tools in order to
shift gears. I need quiet so that I can silence the whining child in my
head and humble myself to the re-birthing process that has dominated my
life lately. I now respect my every wrongdoing, failure, shortcoming,
and deficit as a rung, every hole as a grip. I respect myself as worthy
of forgiveness, as I forgive freely. I give thanks knowing that I’m
blessed, that I’m more than sufficient, and that since God saw fit to
wake me up this morning, I’d better make the best of it!

Lovingly,
~ ars.aprilisms, a blog by April R. "That's Bananas!," I would have said.

I'm back in the US now and I'm still processing, I'm still shook to my very core about what I learned and unlearned while in Nigeria for a short week. I feel un-robed. This nakedness is more sobering than anticipated.

There are many ways to give birth, to be naked, to open up to the world. There are many ways to learn a new thing. Doing so from a quiet place is one way and were I not a feminine energy, Gemini woman who ascribes spiritual and symbolic meaning to everything (every single thing), I would have, perhaps, been "blogged out" by now. But I am that woman so I'm quiet in the moment.

But while I savor my African life lessons and give them an opportunity to settle in their rightful place, I'll be loud and clear about this one thing: Go hug an artist and thank the activists you know. Send good vibes to all the ones you don't. All over the world, our survival is in their hands. Shame on us if our actions don't show how much we care.

More to come...

A little after midnight (ET), Thursday, March 7, I was flying over the Atlantic Ocean listening to "Water No Get Enemy" by Fela Kuti.

Preparing for this trip to Africa has been a challenge. It was so last minute that I hardly had time to catch my breath (note: Don't read that as a compliant). Everything was rush, rush, rush. Get shots...rush. Get VISA...rush. Oh no! A friend says: "You didn't get all the right shots, April!" Rush some more. Take care of your clients, prep the clients and the team for your departure...DON'T RUSH.

There was very little time to think. Only time to react. I went into "nerves of steel" mode in order to stay as focused and as organized as humanly possible. Every once in a while, I would have these moments where I'd pause and ask, "Am I really going to Africa? Wow!" Then I'd snap out of it and get back to work. While I was excited from the moment I got the confirmation, it but me in a tail spin. I only had a week and a half to get ready. So little time for all the work needed in order to have a great trip.

This past weekend, the reality started to seep in. The countdown had begun. "I'm really going to Africa." And then my good friend Curtis made it crystal clear, "April this is not a trip for you. It's a journey. Enjoy your journey and be sure to share the experience." Well that sealed it for me, that and the realization that my going to Africa would likely be the first time that someone from my family (either side) went to Africa since enslavement.

For a quick moment, the idea that I might be the first to return was a powerful one. But then I thought, so what? I'm not competing so there's no value in being first. In a moment's time, I realized that the value is in going back and being purposeful and open minded. I'm going back with a profound understanding of my ancestral ties, that I have a connection to this sacred place that transcends time and distance.

And when I speak of my ancestral ties, I don't mean it in a cliche, abstract kind of way. When I reference ancestors, I'm talking about those once real-live people whose blood runs through my veins. I contemplate their lives daily. I contemplate the specific African men or women with a gap in their teeth, like the one I now have. I think about the African men or women with big eyes and a lean frame who passed those genes through the Silver line; and the African men or women with the broad shoulders and tall frame who passed those genes through the McCullough line. Since I was a child, I've contemplated what kind of children my great-great-great-great-grandparents were: What were their toys, their fears, their joys? What secrets did they carry into adulthood, if they lived that long? I give thanks for the ones who, generations ago, clutched their hearts yearning for the protection of their lineage, even without knowing us. And I'm not a total romantic, so I also think about my ancestors who could didn't care about the future, only for themselves, in that moment in time.

I know that my ancestors' lives were as complex and layered as our lives are today, if not considerably more. The historical context is different, and so may be the ideological and cultural context. Still, I pause for my ancestors daily. I pray that they rest in peace...daily. I live my life in a way that I hope honors their sacrifices and their good names.

In my daily reflections about my lineage and the layers that define them, one thing remains true: Africa is central. So here on my first night on the continent, specifically in Nigeria, I'm not rushing, I'm not in "get ready" mode, I have no anxiety about clients, team, work, what I forget to pack, or any of those simple things (not any more). I am where I belong, on African soil, giving thanks.
February 19, 2013.
A director from American University of Nigeria sent me an email to invite me to speak on the business side of art and entertainment - all expenses paid plus an honorarium. He said I had come strongly recommended by a mutual friend, Kevin Powell. He also said that if I was interested and available, we'd have to move rather quickly to get things in place.

March 7, 2013.
Almost two weeks later, I'm aboard a plane headed to Abuja, capital city of Nigeria. From there I go to Yola, where I'll give my speech. I started yesterday and have been en route for about 14 hours, including a layover in Germany. But I'm almost there now. We'll land in an hour and 45 minutes.

There's a little turbulence in the air as I type this and the ride is getting a little bumpy. Quite telling. I am still in a mild state of shock and have run out of places to pinch. This is really happening.

Thank you, Kevin. You have helped clear the path for something bigger than you know.
Four days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall in my hometown New York, I'm still heartbroken and amazed. Amazed at how, for some people, Sandy was not intrusive at all: a scary superstorm that was more annoying than catastrophic. No material damage, no property lost, no loss of life. A not-so quiet (but hardly fatal) storm. But tragically for others, it was a life-ending thrust of nature, a God-awesome force so powerful that one could not help but be reminded that our ultimate submission is inevitable. Our eldest don't even recall a storm this horrific in the Northeast United States, ever.

I was not in New York when it all began but days later, I'm still rattled. And I have mixed feelings about the epic poetry of it all. My higher self longs to unpack and embrace the spiritual meaning of Sandy; to find comfort in the new birth that her bold arrival could symbolize for many of us. ASAP, I want to leap to better days and fertile ground, trusting that all will be well, eventually. My other self - the politicized, social justice activist version, is not as patient. Far Rockaway is catching a bad one. The Black and Brown people there, regardless of their economic status, are being disrespected and neglected. Racism in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is trauma times trauma for that community. This morning, I spoke to my cousin, a proud life-long resident of Far Rockaway. "April, FEMA, the National Guards, the police, the media...they are all here. We see them. We see them driving right pass us...headed straight to Breezy Point, a gated, wealthy white community out here." Her family, my other cousins, aunts, and uncles (and their neighbors) do not have heat, water, or power. In some cases, they have been told by officials in their buildings that utilities will not be restored for another four to six weeks, if they've been told anything at all. And what's more insulting to them is how, suddenly, Breezy Point has become all that matters in The Rockaways. The residents know better. The media does not. In fact, residents in Far Rock (as it's affectionately called) have tried to get their voices heard by diligently contacting local media and their elected officials. Not only are they being mostly ignored, but some are being chastised for seeking help. A resident of Far Rock called one of the major TV stations in an attempt to raise awareness about how desperately their part of Queens needs help. She was scolded instead. The media personnel asked the suffering caller (who has been living without power, heat, and water for four days), "How dare you imply that we haven't given coverage to your needs? We've been in Breezy Point for four days!" Data indicates that Breezy Point is 99% White...and affluent. Far Rock and other parts of The Rockaways is largely every other color in New York's diverse rainbow. The woman at the TV station was clueless. Worse, she did not care enough to listen, to consider that there was more to the story.

In other short-sighted media coverage, the new bromance between New Jersey Governor Christie and President Obama is over the top. We get it, you're tickled pink. Next, please. But no more stories about the crane that's dangling over W. 57th Street, please. And yesterday, the national news made a big story about the neglect of Staten Island. That's fair coverage, I firmly believe. But what's unjust is that communities of color are - in effect - being non-treated as though they don't even exist. It's clear that the full face of the storm has not emerged. My heart is heavy over the loss of life and the loss of property for everyone affected by the storm. Yet I'm equally sadden, and coiled with outrage, at how Black and Brown people have been marginalized by elected officials and national media outlets who are over-saturating their top stories with how the affluent and/or White residents of New York and New Jersey have been devastated. Affluent and/or White people should have their voices heard and their desperate needs in this disaster should be immediately addressed. Period. It is simultaneously true, however, that their rescue should not come at the gross avoidance of other rescues. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the hierarchical, exclusionary approach to who gets saved, who gets attention, and who gets to lay their head on the president's shoulder is steeped in this country's obsession with saving, comforting, and sustaining White life. A post-racial America would not stand for this, now would it?

The 2012 NYC Marathon, officially billed as a "Race to Recover," will make its way through the city in two days. Unless something is done now my family - with countless others in Black and Brown communities - will be on their sixth day without water, heat, and power when the marathon makes landfall. The marathon itself, its runners, the city, and the corporations that are (stupidly) hell bent on going ahead with the race, will be heralded as symbols of resilience, not just for New York, but for all those affected by Hurricane Sandy in the entire Northeast United States. A week after the storm hit, the marathon would be a divinely timed, perfect feel-good story; the kind of story that gives birth to triumphant folklore. The reality, however, is that life is not that shallow and we don't have enough feel-good stories to go around just yet. There are troubled waters raging in our communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy that a marathon cannot bridge. It is shameful and completely unjust that the world will watch people running past – however figuratively - the devastation that Hurricane Sandy left behind. That emergency first responders, elected officials, police officers, and other people whose duty it is to serve all New Yorkers will be concentrated and focused on this sports event is absurd. That people who were forced to evacuate their homes (and some did so to hotels in Manhattan) will now have to re-evacuate to make room for NYC marathon out-of-towners is absurd bold. That NYPD will be focused on lining up barricades along the marathon route as opposed to doing their jobs in under-served communities in crisis is absurd, ALL CAPS. To have paramedics and other medical officials at the marathon, on-call to cater to people privileged enough to chose to run this marathon (as distinguished as it is) instead of having them caring for those who have been without food, water, or heat for days must be shattering a few moral codes, I'm sure. I respect sports immensely and I have no doubt that this marathon is somebody's personal triumph; that it means more to those runners that I can imagine. But these questions have not been fairly addressed in the eyes of many: How many thousands upon thousands of people have to suffer needlessly so that a runner can make his or her dream come true? What level of devastation is required before Mayor Bloomberg (and all those who agree with him) would concede that the emergency well-being of New Yorkers is more important than making money? Identify for me please just a sliver of logic and fairness in the statement that the city's priority right now should be in bringing a massive group of people into all five boroughs of a city that is still disoriented and traumatized by Hurricane Sandy, people who aren't even here to help. But the height of absurdity is Mayor Bloomberg stating that he doesn't want the President of the United States to come to New York to survey the damage of Hurricane Sandy because such a visit would pull too many resources away from relief work, yet days later he (Bloomberg) announces that the marathon will proceed on schedule, as though somehow magically the marathon will not do the same.

Sunday, the City of New York will show its obnoxious side under the guise of being New York tough. I hope the city I love so much will show its other side and protest. In true New York fashion, we should continue to make the nation and the world appreciate the fact that the impact of Sandy is as layered as the city itself and that our communities, including Far Rock, need more help than the runners.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Since last night and through this morning I've been contemplating the words, "I can't breathe. I can't breathe." Reportedly, those were the last words of the iconic Heavy D. It is said that he was in distress before he died yesterday afternoon.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">My heart is filled with sadness for his family and friends. I've been pausing periodically to send them my love through prayer. It all seems so unfair. Too final. Abrupt.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The first person I called when I got the breaking news from allhiphop.com was Timothy Jones. Tim and I headed the hip hop conference at Howard University (1991-96) and it was the hip hop conference that served as background for me having met Heavy D in the first place, 20 years ago. I was president of the conference and Heavy D was one of the biggest names in hip hop. We dedicated the conference to the several people that tragically lost their lives at the City College basketball game that Hev and Sean Combs promoted (Diddy was known as "Puffy" at the time). I remember Hev being consistently gracious. A gentle giant.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I didn't know Heavy D, I only met him. I loved what I saw, though: warmth, skill, talent, adaptability, a bright light, and some serious dance moves, LOL! He was fun and kind. A peer, he was my generation's version of "Mr. Big Stuff," and he was also my generation's version of Mr. Good Stuff. Meaning, Heavy embodied a spirit that reminded us to have fun and to dance, but without being silly or mindless or irresponsible. And to be cool at it.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Life has an unapologetic way of reminding us what's not promised. Death can come at any time, whether you do good work or not. Whether you pray, meditate, work out, eat healthy, tuck your children in at night, give tithes, meet your deadlines at work, call your loved ones just say "hi," go to yet another meeting, catch up on your reading, say a kind word, vote, protest, boycott, fight back...or not. Death is the victor every time so how we live our lives matters. Abrupt transitions like this give pause to the living.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I'm reminded of the book of Ecclesiastes from the Bible. It is one of the sacred text that I turn to when things seem out of order. In it, Solomon contemplates the meaning of life. He takes a mental journey that is profoundly philosophical. In the end, we are reminded that, when all things are surveyed, it's best to live happy, enjoy work, and to have faith. And there is no way to have enduring faith without doing the work - be it spiritual work, intellectual work, political work, and the heavy-lifting work that is required to be women and men of good character.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Because I know that the sun shines on both the oppressed and the oppressors, my life is committed to preventing love deserts in my family and in my community. It's complex and it's hard work, but I'm not here to do much else.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Public Enemy at work. Heavy D at play. Bididilly-bididilly-didilly-didilly dee...or however you spell that thing he did. Hip hop heads know what I'm talkin' 'bout, LOL!
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: center;">Thank you, sir. Thank you for sharing your talents
with us and reminding us, in your last tweet, to "be inspired."
In this 9th month, I'm looking back at months of loss, death, fatigue, mistakes, and worst of all betrayal by people who I thought were compassionate human beings. I feel as though I was born all over again, at 43; as though I just arrived on planet earth; as though I was made to learn some of life lessons from scratch, like a new born.

And most of the turbulence this year has been centered around work - or from people at work, or from the fact that there is so much work, that I can't ever seem to get a break from work, or that people don't want to pay for work, or that people disrespect my work. Rarely a minute to exhale. I do understand why some people seek refuge. Some do it by partying, with addictions, through seclusion. We all need exit routes.

But then Khalil comes to mind. But the New York Police Department (NYPD) is at it again and I need to fold in the latest news from Brooklyn.

Yesterday (September 5, 2011) at the annual Caribbean Day Parade, NYPD showed again just how much it lusts for Black and Brown men. NYPD has a ferocious appetite for arresting, detaining, and often times brutalizing men of color. They have made it clear that your class status, your education level, whether or not you're employed, what kind of people you socialize with, where you're from...none of that will protect you from their unprovoked attacks. In fact, as in the case of these two Black men: Jumanne Williams and Kristen John Foy , you can even be an elected official (Williams) and a public servant like Foy (who is the Director of Community Relations for NYC Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio) and you will still be targeted as a threat by NYPD. Only White men, it appears, escape the loathing of NYPD.

NYC Councilmember Williams and Mr. Foy were arrested yesterday at the parade as they tried to exit. They showed their city credentials to NYPD officers who were trying to block their path, credentials that are issued as proof of the position and stature they hold in the city they serve. None of that mattered. At least one of them was thrown to the ground and both were arrested and detained. The New York Times article includes video.

SIDE NOTE: Most media reports that I saw or read indicated that the men were "briefly detained." Perhaps that's the language given by NYPD, a poor attempt to clean up this ugly situation. It's not working. It's tantamount to saying the men were arrested a little.

So it's timely - as I remind POB! subscribers of the Monumental 5 court date [scroll down for details] - that I also reference the Williams/Foy incident as another case of police misconduct against Black men. It will serve as a teachable moment for some, for those who believe that NYPD only arrests people who "must have been doing something wrong." That is not the truth.

I'm told that Williams is holding a press conference this morning to make a statement about the arrests. Bill DeBlasio (who has shown consistent, pro-active support of the community work that activist, writer Kevin Powell and I have done over the years) is calling for an investigation. All of that, and more, is needed in order for people of color to enjoy the peaceful, safe environment that we deserve, and that we pay for with our tax dollars. There is no way for New York to be safe if only White people are the only group of people that NYPD respects. The police department must be held accountable for their misconduct, for the brutal and deadly force, and for the assumption they have that Black and Brown men are inherently dangerous.

To the beholden: I'm not lost on the fact that White people get arrested in NY and that some Black and Brown men are indeed dangerous, so save those counter-arguments. I'm addressing the fact that our communities are disproportionally under siege in New York City and it has everything to do with race. Consider these facts that community organizer Lumumba Bandele shared during our work for the Monumental 5:

"According to the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union]: In 2010 alone, NYPD officers made over half a million stops, 85 percent of which targeted people of color. The reason given by NYPD for what are called "stop-and-frisk" activities were guns. In all of these cases, however, less than 0.2 percent of "stop-and-frisk" resulted in guns being found. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund: Blacks and Latinos represent over 90% of all citywide trespass arrests on NYCHA [New York City Housing Authority] property although we make up only 54% of the New York City population."

Read the full statement HERE

During a recent community gathering for the Monumental 5, I addressed a common question you may have asked yourself: "Why do the police terrorize our communities?" The sober answer is "Because they can." But it doesn't have to be this way. Organizations such as the People's Justice Coalition and their Cop Watch program give us concrete examples of what we can do, legally, to let NYPD know that they will not always get away with misconduct and brutal behavior. I strongly encourage you to watch the video below from that event (see part 2 featuring Linda Tigani of Cop Watch, below). It gives insights into how we can create a "culture of observation" against the NYPD. Go to this link to SIGN THE PETITION.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">On May 15, 2011, Psychology Today contributor, Satoshi Kanazawa posted an article entitled "Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?" (now removed from their website, but reblogged here). We demand that the Psychology Today editorial board publicly account for how and why this racist and sexist article was allowed to be published on the Psychology Today website, and take transparent steps to prevent this from happening in the future.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Kanazawa's article is nothing more than a vile regurgitation of racist and sexist beliefs about black women disguised as "objective" and "scientific" research findings, and contributes to a historical legacy of using distorted "science" as a tool to justify violent ideas about and treatment of black women. Kanazawa has a history of writing biased and error-ridden articles that attempt to justify racist beliefs. Other scientists have discredited his research and his legitimacy as a social scientist has been called into question. That Psychology Today publishes Kanazawa's often problematic articles casts serious doubt about the trustworthiness of their publications as well as the rigor of their editorial process.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Psychology Today is not just a magazine and website, but it's also a site that people access resources for mental health services for their well being. Publishing damaging and crude articles such as Kanazawa's demonstrates a profound disrespect for anyone who turns to Psychology Today for these resources.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Though Psychology Today has removed the article from their website without explanation, the editors have not acknowledged or taken responsibility for publishing the article, discussed the editorial standards they require from their contributors and whether this article satisfied those standards, or explained why Kanazawa remains as a contributor, despite being discredited by other social scientists. Psychology Today editors have a journalistic and ethical duty to be both transparent about how this article was published and accountable for this failure in public trust.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Because of the damage that this kind of misinformation creates for both the public and Psychology Today, we demand the following:
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">1) a public statement from Psychology Today editors demonstrating accountability for the article itself and the editorial conditions that allowed this article to be published on your website,
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">2) the removal of Satoshi Kanazawa as a contributor to your website, magazine, and any other Psychology Today publications based on his history of discredited research and repeatedly submitting racially biased articles to Psychology Today, including this most recent disturbing article that your editors chose to abruptly scrub from your website,
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">3) and the development of more thoughtful and sophisticated strategies for identifying how racism, sexism, homophobia/transphobia, and other oppressions and biases shape any so-called "objective" scientific inquiries, methodologies, and findings that your contributors examine in your publications. These strategies should be communicated to the public in an effort to be more transparent about how you are disrupting bias in your reporting.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Jenny B. Silver had wished for an extended Mother's Day weekend with her children so we obliged. It was a sweet weekend of enjoying each other's company and playing with Hoshi (my brother and sister-in-law's dog). Saturday, we took Ms. Silver shopping where she picked the gifts of her choice. Words are not simple. Maya Angelou said they are things. They are absorbed by people, they fill up rooms, they settle on furniture. Maybe. Like dust. Further, I believe that words carry spirits and intentions. They are magic in that they have the ability to transform, be it for creative or destructive purposes.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
So as the daughter of ancestors who were enslaved Africans and as one who is a public relations and marketing professional, I take exception to the word “brand,” the industry term that is so commonly used to articulate one’s identity in the market place.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Yesterday, I was at the New School in New York City where I spoke at a conference entitled “Re-Mixed and Re-Mastered: Defining and Distributing the Black Image in the Era of Globalization.” I was a panelist at the Developing Your Brand and Audience Using Social Media discussion. It was targeted for media makers, mostly those who make films. The discussion was robust and I think invigorating for all of us.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
At one point, however, I expressed my long-standing objection to the marketing terms “brand” and “branding.” I actually loathe the words and don’t use them at my agency. I get that they are popular industry terms. Don’t care. And I understand the possible dismissive reactions to my stance. Still don’t care. (I also don't refer to my ancestors as "slaves." Rather, I acknowledge what happened to them: They were enslaved Africans. (At the panel, no one seemed to disagree with my explanation, by the way.)During the American era of enslavement, Black people in this country were sold as chattel and marked, with branding rods, for identification and ownership purposes. So when I hear “brand,” my mind conjures up images of sizzling, burned flesh. I hear people wailing. I hear screams like sirens, piercing. I don’t want to yet I can’t help but see images of a great, great, great aunt perhaps, restrained and anchored by rusty chains. The “slave trader” is holding a fired-up branding rod. Maybe it has the letter “W” on it. My aunt is scrambling for her life - madly, desperately trying to dodge the scorching iron that is aimed at her left shoulder blade. She can’t escape and must submit. Her family is nearby watching her body jolt and wither. Her eyes roll back and she passes out. Her husband, her daughters, and her siblings are nearby watching, horrified. They would give their lives to have her released but they have no power that will save her in that moment. Barely able to breathe themselves, they smell her seared flesh. They also taste their own vomit. They are next.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
--

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
I am tethered to my history and my ancestors are ever-present. Their presence is not rhetorical. I recall them as real live people who had skin and bones. I think about their feelings, their ideas, and their aspirations. I think about what they cooked, what smells lingered in their homes. I hear girls laughing, I see hands playing in the earth's soil...all of it. When I gaze at the moon on pensive nights, I wonder about what they thought when they did the same. They constantly call me by name. Always in my left ear. I honor them by not taking their lives, nor what was done to them, lightly.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
As a business owner of African ancestry whose work requires that I shape and transmit messages, I opt not to use the word “brand” in my conversations about marketing. Of all the freedoms that I have today, surely I can disregard industry norms that don’t suit me. Navigating the marketplace in today’s business world need not be analogous to inhumane behavior. The notion or process of identifying and promoting one’s mark (marketing) is, in essence, about finding one’s own signature. At AKILA WORKSONGS, we simply use "signature" or "identity" to replace the word "brand."

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
I do understand that it’s common for people to use words, but not know their depth or historical context. I get it but I’ve never been that casual. It’s doubtful that my feminine energy, search-for-the-deeper meaning Gemini self will ever have such a superficial relationship to anything, especially words. I’m grateful that I am free to define my own terms.
The New School is a legendary progressive university comprising eight schools bound by a common, unusual intent: to prepare and inspire its 10,510 undergraduate and graduate students to bring actual, positive change to the world. From its Greenwich Village campus, The New School launches economists and actors, fashion designers and urban planners, dancers and anthropologists, orchestra conductors, filmmakers, political scientists, organizational experts, jazz musicians, scholars, psychologists, historians, journalists, and above all, world citizens-individuals whose ideas and innovations forge new paths of progress in the arts, design, humanities, public policy, and the social sciences. In addition to its 88 graduate and undergraduate degree-granting programs and majors, the university offers certificate programs and more than 650 continuing education courses to more than 6,350 adult learners every year.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7841244634002773979.post-53559036810867933552011-03-28T20:25:00.008-04:002011-03-28T20:59:46.946-04:00Rev.
